Several softening point setups including an automatic apparatus using the ring and ball method are available for testing asphalts, pitches, tars and most resins. Because of a wide variety of available ASTM thermometers, none is included. The appropriate thermometer must be selected from the listing under item B1301C (in asphalt category).
